At long last, we are so excited to introduce our new Green Plate Special Free Seed Library! Located just inside our gate, this sweet little cabinet is stocked with seeds that anyone from the community is welcome to take. Likewise, if you have spare seeds that you’d like to share, we’d love for community members to donate seeds to help us keep it stocked!
We’ve been taking special care this year to expand the ways our community can benefit from the Green Plate Special garden. From expanding the amount of produce going in our weekly free bin, to installing free you-pick beds outside the fence, to this little Free Seed Library, we hope each of our friends and neighbors can find a way that feels good to share in the garden love. Best of all, it’s Green Plate Special youth who do the weekly harvest for the free bin, who planted the kale and collard greens in our you-pick beds, and who sorted and packaged many of the seeds you’ll find in the seed library.
Additionally, thank you to our volunteers Kay for talking the lead on planning and for painting the delightful vegetables inside the library, and to Dana for painting the beautiful lettering on the outside. And our devoted Tuesday evening volunteers helped us build inventory and organize the seeds we had on hand, including many seeds we have saved ourselves right here from the Green Plate Special garden! They truly transformed the old red kitchen cabinet into something so meaningful for the community.
Gardening is all about nurturing our connections with our bodies, our communities, and the earth, and we are so grateful for all of the magical people who help us make this happen every day.
