Reports to: Camp Manager  

Overview: Reporting to the Camp Manager, the Seasonal Garden Coordinator (GC) is responsible for planning, tracking, mapping, and executing all aspects of the GPS teaching garden, which includes the chicken yard. This is a leadership position that requires a great deal of collaboration between all positions at GPS, particularly the Camp Manager and Business Manager. They will also coordinate and lead garden volunteers. Finally, they will be a point person for building and maintaining relationships with peer organizations in urban agriculture and neighbors in the immediate community. The GC will maintain the health and proper organization of supplies and equipment in the garden classroom.  

The GC is organized; detail-oriented; an excellent communicator; has an eye and passion for the beauty, diversity, and productivity of the GPS garden; and is a warm, welcoming presence for youth and community.   

Responsibilities:   

Leadership & Management:  

  • Provides leadership to garden volunteers and the education team regarding garden maintenance.   

  • Collaborates with Camp Manager to make purchasing decisions for garden tools and maintenance.  

  • Participates and collaborates in staff anti-racism and equity work, providing leadership in the implementation of strategies that pertain to the garden.  

 Garden Planning, Tracking, and Care:  

  • Plan & maintain GPS garden, using regenerative agriculture practices including crop rotation, intensive & successive planting to maximize space/yield throughout the season; companion planting for pest & weed management; no-till methods to maintain the integrity of soil structure and microorganisms; and composting to maintain a nutrient balance of the soil.  

  • Keep detailed calendar records of harvest yields and produce donations.  

  • Available for occasional weekend watering, chicken care, and monitoring seedlings, as needed.   

  • General maintenance, planting, watering, weeding, pest control, etc.  

  • Purchase and manage all materials and tools within the budget allowed, in collaboration with Camp Manager.  

  • Organize and maintain greenhouse, processing, and shed areas. 

  • Inventory and maintain general garden supplies.  

 Chicken Care:  

  • Lead daily care of chickens and maintenance of the chicken yard.  

  • Coordinate communication with weekend chicken care volunteers.  

 Community Outreach and Support:  

  • Plan and oversee produce and plant/seed distributions for the immediate community through free-boxes, direct engagement with passers-by, and the free seed library.  

  • Plan and deliver food bank donations (Rainier Valley FB).  

Schedule and Benefits  

  • This is currently a 30hr/week, an hourly position through the end of August 2021.  

  • The schedule will fluctuate and be determined by garden and program needs. Some evening and weekend hours will be required for programming, special events, and work parties.  

  • Occasional travel and supply pick-up is required. Therefore, access to a vehicle is required for this position.   

  • Sick leave is provided.  

 Pay: $22/hour
