Classes and Camps

Are you in 4th through 8th grade? Green Plate Special has after-school programs and summer camps for you! Join us for cooking classes and garden programs. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Our programs involve both cooking and gardening – you will plant and pick the things you cook!
  • Camps and classes take place on our property in Rainier Valley, on the corner of 25th Ave S and S Walker
  • You will need transportation to and from our garden in Rainier Valley. In some instances, transportation from school to the garden is provided.

Family Evening Cooking Classes [CLOSED]

Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts we will no longer have this program available for Spring 2019. Please check back in the fall to see if we offer a fall series. In the meantime, sign your youth up for our Spring Break Camp or Summer Camp!

2019 Summer Market Stand Youth Intern Application

Program type: 9 weeks + Garden Gala
Dates: Jul 3, 2019 through Aug 29, 2019
Day of the week: Wednesdays and Thursdays
Time: 9am-3pm Wednesdays, 10am-5pm Thursdays

Program Description

If you are a youth who has participated in two GPS programs and are in a grade rising 7th-9th, apply to work with Green Plate Special this summer! Learn about food justice issues in Seattle and sell vegetables from our on-site produce stand. Your job will include: harvesting, sales, marketing and design (art and signage), all aspects of setting up and closing up of the produce stand, and being an ambassador for Green Plate Special.

Applications are due BY MONDAY APRIL 22ND

When: July 3 – August 29 | Wednesdays, 9:00am-3:00pm and Thursdays, 10:00am-5:00pm (9 weeks plus Gala responsibilities on Saturday, September 21, 4:00pm-9:00pm)The first two weeks of the internship will be held only on Wednesdays.

Youth interns receive 1 week off during this program.

Payment: Earn up to $250 for the summer

Breakfast and lunch are provided, as well as treats from the garden and occasional leftovers to take home throughout the summer!

This stipend-paid summer internship is designed to strengthen and build upon your previous experiences at Green Plate Special. We expect that you bring with you the basic practices of growing food, cooking, and sharing meals as a community. The internship’s food justice curriculum explores how food connects us to a much wider community of stakeholders, from grocery stores to urban farms, to food banks. We will begin to ask big questions about food access issues in Seattle, and how food production impacts environmental and human health on a systemic level. While operating the market stand, you will also learn practical, transferable job skills such as customer service, counting money, making change, marketing, inventory, and more.

Program Description

Knife Skills | Cooking Techniques | Hearty, Balanced Recipes

A seed-to-table camp experience for youth ages 9-14 grades rising 4th - 9th! Learn tasty recipes, balanced meals, knife skills, and cooking techniques. Plant seeds and explore the Green Plate Special garden. Befriend our chickens and collect their eggs. Make your own pizza and create food-inspired art projects. Leave with your leftovers every day!

Camp time: 10:00am - 4:00pm (extended care available 8am - 5:30pm)
