Summer Camps - 2020

A seed-to-table camp experience

Hands-On Gardening | Knife Skills | Cooking Techniques

A seed-to-table camp experience for youth grades rising 4th - 9th! Learn exciting recipes, knife skills, and cooking techniques. Plant seeds, learn about the earth, and explore the Green Plate Special garden. Befriend our chickens and collect their eggs. Make your own pizza and create food-inspired art projects. Leave with your leftovers every day!

Each day we will explore the garden to connect the foods we grow to the foods we cook in our kitchen and eat together. Led and supported by the Green Plate Special education staff.

Camp Themes:

Earth, Body, Community: Want to explore how to best care for yourself, our earth and local community? We’ll tend to the garden and its creatures (including the plants, insects and our flock of chickens) and make fun creative art projects, like soaps and salves. Each day we’ll cook different recipes that feature ingredients that we grow and harvest together, and learn new cooking techniques to prepare them. The best part is sharing these delicious, nutritious lunches together…even pizza!

Around the World: This camp will be full of world exploration! Learn about the origins of your favorite dishes, how foods shift across borders, and the different ways people cook these dishes in all corners of the world. We’ll explore recipes and make foods like dumplings, soups, flatbreads and more, using fresh veggies from the garden and spices from around the world. Plus, you’ll cook with our wood-fired oven!

Urban Farmer: Ever wonder what it would be like to be a farmer? What about a farmer in the city? This camp is all about learning where our food comes from and how to cook snacks and dishes from scratch. Learn how to tend to the garden through planting seeds, soil science, and harvesting. Cooking and art projects focus on preservation, seed-saving and garden-fresh dishes. Yes, you’ll cook in our wood-fired oven, too!

Chef's Bounty: Dream of being a chef or starting your own farm? Follow your calling as you dive deep into the culinary arts, learning how to cook with and harvest all the fresh produce that the garden offers, seed to plate. Our farm is full of life and we will explore the bounty of the season together. Celebrate the end of summer with garden-themed art projects and pizza from our wood-fired oven!
