Rainier Scholar Interns - Fall 2020

This fall we have been so happy to have the support of two interns from Rainier Scholars, Nura and Edhil. They assist us with our grocery distribution services. This program will last 6 weeks total and involves harvesting, washing, and bagging produce from the garden to distribute in our grocery bags for local families. They also assemble the other food for the bags and perform various important tasks for grocery distribution.

Both of them have a passion for food and were eager to support local families. We could tell you more about them, but it's best you hear it from them! Below are their bios, which they've written themselves.

Edhil Haid

Hi my name is Edhil! I’m originally from Atlanta, Georgia, but I’ve grown up in Seattle most of my life. I’m currently in 10th grade and go to the Northwest School! I really like the humanities program there. I love to crochet in my free time. I find it very relaxing and calming. Another thing I like to do in my free time is to hang out with my siblings, one older sister, 2 younger sisters, and a younger brother. I wanted to do this internship because I’m really passionate about social justice movements like the Black Lives Matter movement and Environmental Justice and I’m also really interested in how these things impact my community. I thought that it would be really cool to intern at Green Plate because my interest in social justice is something that Green Plate focuses on, particularly food security in my community. I’m really looking forward to helping out with food distribution because I want to help out those in my community and area.

Favorite fruit or vegetable: strawberries and potatoes

Favorite food memory: cooking food with my mom, specifically baking madelines

Nura Ali

I am Nura. I’m an intern here at Green Plate Special. I’m currently in the 9th grade, and attend Seattle Academy. I’m Ethiopian, but Seattle is where I was born and raised. The reason I wanted to do this internship is because I feel distributing food to people is a good way to help others, especially during this pandemic. I also personally enjoy all things surrounding food, which is great because during this internship we’ll be able to garden, package food, and sometimes even make it. When I’m not at Green Plate Special I’m usually home watching a show, listening to music, drawing, and if I have time I like to bake as well. Hanging out with my friends is also something I love to do. At Green Plate Special I’m looking forward to cooking/baking something and then maybe distributing it. I’m super excited and can’t wait to keep working here.

Favorite fruit or vegetable: potato, apple

Favorite food memory: making a really good white chocolate cream cheese frosting
