Newsletter: Spring '19

Written By: Alex Virata - 5/31/2019

The Spring '19 edition of our seasonal newsletter. This issue contains information on: summer camp slots, the fall garden gala, the academic year's last Atlantic Street Center session, the "Celebrating Our Community!" event, and board member recruitment.

Summer Camps Full

This year our summer camp slots filled up faster than ever before. If a member of your family was hoping to attend a week of summer camp, there’s still a chance! Wait lists are available. If you would like to add a youth to our wait lists, email classes@greenplatespecial.org with the first and last name of the participating youth as well as the camp week they are interested in attending. To read more about the details of our camps, including the themes of each week, visit our Classes + Camps page.

Save the Date for Our Garden Gala!

Green Plate Special’s Sixth Annual Garden Gala will take place on…

September 21st, 2019 – 5pm

This year’s lineup of veggie pull prizes, silent auction items, and speakers is looking great! We are also planning on sharing a special mystery gift with our guests. Keep your eyes on your inbox and mailbox as we open up ticket sales near the end of June.

Last Atlantic Street Center Session

Yesterday we had our last Atlantic Street session before summer break, and we capped off this season in style! ASC youth filled take-home bags with fresh produce they clipped/pulled/plucked from the garden, including our first ripe batch of strawberries this year. They each rolled out, topped (minimum of two types of veggies!), and baked two small pizzas to sit down and enjoy together. When all plates were cleared and the conversation began to simmer down, we circled up and shared our fondest memories of the academic year. While there was, of course, much discussion of cooking and gardening there was also deep expression of friendship.

We hope to see them all again soon! They will always have a home here.

Celebrating Our Community

On May 18th we opened our garden gates and invited our neighbors to join us for an afternoon of cool crafts, cold beverages, paper pots, and FOOD!

Families from surrounding areas came out to explore the space and meet the Green Plate Special staff. Guests were encouraged to bake their own chapati and choose from an array of sweet and savory toppings, including a couple of pestos made with garlic and basil from the GPS garden. Our garden coordinator, Alex Moni-Sauri, also ran a potting station where people planted nasturtium seeds in hand-made newspaper pots. If you were there, you might have recognized the familiar face of one of our youth ambassadors running the arts and crafts table: Sydney, our former senior youth intern, walked guests through the steps of making custom floral bookmarks.

All in all we were thrilled by the number of new faces that joined us, and we look forward to having many more events similar to this in the future! It was wonderful having the opportunity to connect with our local community in such a casual, fun way.

Now Recruiting: Board Members
