Exploring soil with Madrona K-8

13 Apr

We’ve been busy with spring planting with students from Madrona K-8! In the last month, students learned about what seeds need in order to be successful. We started peas in the greenhouse that we transplanted into garden beds this week. Students learned to started tomatoes and peppers in the Green Plate Special greenhouse, and direct-seeded root veggies and greens in the garden.

One of our focuses this spring was learning about the composition of soil through creating our own soil recipe. This interactive lesson included a scavenger hunt for soil ingredients. We put the lesson into practice by testing the health of the soil in the Madrona K-8 garden beds with pH strips. The students were thrilled to find the soil is perfect for planting!
