To honor and celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. Green Plate Special hosted a youth-driven soap-making party! Their hand-crafted soaps made from herbs, essences and flowers (yes we still have pansies in the garden!) will be gifted to families currently receiving shelter and support at Mary’s Place.
Mary’s Place is a nonprofit that empowers homeless women, children and families to reclaim their lives by providing respite, nutrition, safety and shelter in a setting where self-confidence is restored, hope is discovered, and a new future begins.
Green Plate Special invited youth that have previously worked with us (gone through our programs) to spend this cold January day with us, sharing a healthy breakfast and lunch (there is ALWAYS nutritious food at GPS!) while creating their own styles of decorative soaps using essential oils and garden herbs.
Youth discussed why we celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday in this and so many ways around the country. We also learned more about Mary’s Place and the purpose they serve in our community, and provide an open discussion around why shelters and support of this kind are needed in our community and in our country.
These soaps (a very popular camp project during spring and summer) were wrapped in decorated paper and taken to one of the many Mary’s Place shelters as a gift from the youth of Green Plate Special.
